At this time of year the tips of the deer grass are starting to turn the mountains to the colours of Autumn. I was inspired by the photographic eye of my boyfriend Cubby to see if this view would work as a painting. I tried a couple of times to get the right conditions to make the most of this panorama. Finally in the afternoon I was rewarded by clear tops and wonderful light.
Recently I took part in an exciting challenge organised through the Wordsworth Trust. Following a recent visit to St Oswalds Church an Grasmere, a number of artists and designers from the Lakes Collective, together with local Poets, collaborated to produce a lovely exhibit of art inspired by poetry.

My chosen poem, 'A Silent Poetry' by Sarah Hymas.

What the relic is to the original,
this church is to its God;
a word contains its thought.

To question demands more,
like arch on arch offering more light
than plaster. Faith is speechless.

Only air distinguishes between
the layering of rushes
and feathers on a wing.

The same air turns yews to music
to shade to silence
to the brimming of this breath

so everything before and beyond
is lost, so deeply here,
like the towering river, the bells -

water and rope, running
through our fingers, cannot
be held or stopped

to be named or sung
except by the blackbird
pulling worms from the grass

too busy to look up. It takes flight
as brother, sister,
a shadow overhead, underfoot.

I found it quite difficult to choose a poem, simply because they all speak to me in many ways, but the common thread is the historical element within layers of history which linger in the space of the church.
The Silent Poetry. Lead me to question, what is language, what is being? Dealing with the concept of time, what makes that moment what it is?

I interpret "A Silent Poetry" as a relationship between elements and environment. One needs the other to evolve, silent and un noticed, yet produce some of the most stunning micro worlds, landscapes. Unwritten poetry.
As a landscape artist, Im influenced by the texture and colour that is provided in nature.
I was drawn to the lichens on the grave stones which have silently evolved, largely un noticed over the years, growing a millimetre a year. A visual passage of time in nature, a reaction between element and environment.

"Only air distinguishes between
the layering of rushes
and feathers on a wing.

The same air turns yews to music
to shade to silence
to the brimming of this breath

so everything before and beyond
is lost, so deeply here,". Sarah Hymas

The micro existence of lichens possess a language of their own, unwritten, beautiful, "A Silent Poetry".

I created a small handmade book, a study of the gravestone lichens.
To kick start the season I am holding an Exhibition in the Yurt Gallery at Rydal Hall, from 2-6th April. I'll be displaying paintings and prints, cards and bookmarks. Its a lovely stop off near a great tearoom (can't resist the cakes) along the popular walking route between Ambleside and Grasmere.
His work would be based there until March. He mentioned on his days off that he has discovered some lovely little harbours, and bays with beaches. He is always on the lookout for photographic potential. It was well worth a visit for sketching. The sea stacks a Duncansby Head is a place that we have earmarked for future inspirations. The stacks change shape, developing into interesting profiles from every angle, taking on different moods with its own unique weather patterns.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00638436025900770720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941821743784124140.post-63190608201875484592013-01-07T06:16:00.000-08:002013-01-07T06:16:02.172-08:00New Year trip North and a new sketching tool.

First of all I'd just like to wish you all a happy new year. Dave and I headed to the far north west for the new year celebrations. Although the weather was far from perfect we still managed to venture out into the elements and sample the bracing southerly winds. Above, I've introduced a sketch using my new christmas pressy, a mini ipad. It takes a bit of time to get used to the techniques and work out what I actually want to achieve with it, but I didn't think it was too bad for a first attempt. I can't see me venturing out without my sketchbook, but the idea of the ipad as an extra tool is definitely growing on me.

I'm making some preparations for my coming Exhibition which starts this Sunday 23rd September at The Yurt Gallery. It is located between the Tea Room and the Campsite within the beautiful grounds of the old Rydal Hall Estate. The opening times are between 10am and 5pm daily until 30th September 2012. I'm hoping to set up a painting space where I can work in the warmth of the woodburning stove. Unless we have a late heatwave! Fingers crossed.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00638436025900770720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941821743784124140.post-43276794578425403022012-07-25T07:19:00.000-07:002012-07-25T07:19:10.041-07:00Skye sketching and climbing

Elgol is an inspiring place, for climbing as well as sketching. We were blessed with such lovely weather for most of the week. From Elgol you can take a boat trip into Loch Scavaig which must be one of the most spectacular places in Britain, bringing you right into the centre of the Cuilin Hills. I went many years ago as a child, we sailed into Loch Scavaig, watching the seals basking on the rocks, as they watched us! An early start on a Monday morning took me onto the fell to exercise, but not just walking. After finding a nice spot to sit down (a great start to a sunny Monday morning), I shut my eyes for a couple of minutes, opened them and immediately started to draw. With biro held loosely I started to translate onto paper what my eye quickly picked out. The emphasis was not to look down at the paper until I'm done drawing. I didn't allow myself to use any other materials other than a biro and a bit of scrap paper.

Quite an interesting image, and not too disappointing.

Opening times are between 10am till 5pm up until Friday 12th August 2011. I will be closed Tuesday. There will be prints and cards for sale along with some original paintings. The Gallery is at Rydal Hall which is approx 2 miles North of Ambleside on the A591. There is a lovely tea room nearby with home made cakes which I'm trying to resist (for now).

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00638436025900770720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941821743784124140.post-62041141571633203432011-06-24T06:35:00.000-07:002011-06-24T07:55:56.380-07:00Sketch notes from Rum
The Cuillin of Rum

The Isle of Rum is a wild landscape with varied geology and abundance of wildlife. They are a visual record of my day in the hills along with my camera. The sketchbook is nearly always the main source from which I base my work as they reflect my initial response to the land and elements in front of me. I often work alongside my partner Dave, better know as Cubby Cuthbertson, an inspirational landscape and climbing photographer, and Einich my little sketching buddy. We are undergoing a few changes to our websites over the next few weeks. Limited edition prints and photographs will be available to buy online. We are looking forward to it and will keep you posted.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00638436025900770720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941821743784124140.post-4616755910535157182010-11-16T03:29:00.000-08:002010-11-16T04:38:00.517-08:00small2010 - Exhibition coming up!!!

small2010 - Information of my latest exhibition can be found by clicking on the link: http://www.millyardstudios.co.uk/programme.htm

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00638436025900770720noreply@blogger.com0
